Northland Chapter of ATSSA
March 17, 2008
I. Call to Order
- Jon Jackels called the meeting to order at 10:00 AM
II. Jon presented the updated Chapter bylaws and proposed that Dean have them included
included on the website.
III. A 7-member Board of Directors was created consisting of the following members:
- Ken Russell
- Rick Shomion
- Jay Blanchard
- Al Weigel
- Jon Jackels
- Tim Marthe
- #7 member will consist of the President Elect which be determined in the July election.
IV. Secretary's report was presented by Al Weigel (minutes posted on website)

V. Treasurer's report was presented by Gary Clark (members only section of website)

VI. Tim Marthe presented an update on the "How To" Conference
- There was discussion and concern in regard to the AV equipment
- There were 451 preregistered, 50 booths, and 10 sponsors for the social. Of the 451,
186 attendees were from local governments.
VII. Rick Shomion presented an overview of the poster contest. He stated the Northland
Chapter needs to become more involved. Rick was the ony person who did a
presentation this year.
- Presentations are easy and fun and can be done toward the end of the year,
submitted to Northland Chapter by February 15th so our winners can be forwarded
to National by March 15th.
- A total of $1,200 is awarded. 3 - K through 3rd grade winners and 3 - 4th through
6th grade winners.
- $100 is awarded to each winning student with the $100 match going to the school.
VIII. Jon stated the Toward Zero Deaths (TZD) Conference will be held October 7 & 8, 2008.
- Jon has reserved the Workers Memorial for the conference at a cost of $500. He also
noted we need volunteers for the booth and that we may have an opportunity to
present at the confernece. Details will be finalized at the July meeting.
IX. Jacquelyn Quash, ATSSA Meeting and Conventions Manager gave the National ATSSA
report. She stated there was just under 5,000 attendees and 500 booths
representing approximately 200 companies.
X. April 7th - 11th is "Work Zone Awareness Week"
XI. Karin Lowe made us aware that ATSSA has made an insurance program available
to all ATSSA members. For more information, contact Peter Elliott at 800-222-4664

XII. Jon stated we have a need for a replacement President Elect in July. According to bylaws,
a nominating committee needed to be formed, which should contain the past president
as one of its members.
- A committee was formed consisting of:
1. Al Weigel - past president
2. Dean Erickson
3. Ken Nelson
- Nominees need to be slated at least 14 days prior to the July meeting.
XIII. A question was asked if the Federal Training Grant that National ATSSA received could
be used for closed course trainings if members have a need and request the training.
- The issues were discussed and Karin was going to have Donna or Roger research
it and respond back to allow the chapters to benefit from the grant funds to get
the much needed training.
XIV. Gary Clark made a request to donate $400 to go toward a much needed laptop
computer for the Minnesota Surveyors and Engineers Society (http://www.mses.org)
- Rick made a motion to approve the $400 request.
- Emily made the second.
- All voted aye - motion carried.
XV. The summer meeting was scheduled for July 28th and 29th, 2008 at Comfort Inn,
Ottertail, MN. Call 877-294-7981 to make reservations.
